“and turn away from the ignorant” (Al-Aʿrāf 199). When this verse was recited to the Commander of the Believers ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with him), he stopped immediately; he neither struck the man nor punished him for his ignorant outburst.
Hence, whenever similar situations arise—rage, anger, or the like—we should remind ourselves of the Book of Allah and the sunnah of His Messenger ﷺ, so that we may proceed by their light and not go astray. Whoever clings to Allah’s guidance, Allah says: “Whoever follows My guidance shall neither go astray nor suffer misery” (Ṭā-Hā 123). Allah is the One who grants success.
- ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “After I am gone there will be favoritism (atharah) and matters you will disapprove of.” They asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what do you command us to do?” He replied, “Discharge the rights that are upon you, and ask Allah for the rights that are due to you.” Agreed upon.
(The term atharah refers to keeping something exclusively for oneself while denying the share of those who are entitled to it.)
- Abū Yaḥyā Usayd ibn Ḥuḍayr (may Allah be pleased with him) related that a man from the Anṣār said, “O Messenger of Allah, will you not appoint me as you appointed so-and-so?” He replied, “You will encounter favoritism after I am gone, so be patient until you meet me at the Basin.” Agreed upon.
