The sounder opinion is that ritual purity is not a condition, for such occasions arise suddenly when a person is unprepared. If he were to leave in order to make ablution, the gap between the cause and its response would become excessively long. Therefore, even if he lacks ritual purity, he should go ahead and prostrate. Allah is the One who grants success.
