sin, but this is only for the one who remains patient. If he reacts with resentment, then whoever resents will find nothing but resentment. Allah alone grants success.

50. Ibn ʿAbbās, may Allah be pleased with them both, reported: ʿUyaynah ibn Ḥiṣn came and stayed with his nephew al-Ḥurr ibn Qays, who was among the group that ʿUmar, may Allah be pleased with him, held in high esteem. The Qurʾān-reciters—whether old or young—were the people who sat in ʿUmar’s council and served as his advisers. ʿUyaynah said to his nephew, “My dear nephew, you have standing with this governor; ask permission for me to see him.” Al-Ḥurr sought leave, and ʿUmar granted it. When ʿUyaynah entered he exclaimed, “Hey there, son of al-Khaṭṭāb! By Allah, you neither give us generous provision nor judge us with justice!” ʿUmar grew so angry that he was about to strike him. Al-Ḥurr interjected, “Commander of the Believers, Allah the Exalted said to His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), ‘Adopt forgiveness; command what is right; and turn away from the ignorant’ (al-Aʿrāf 7:199), and this man is one of the ignorant.” The moment al-Ḥurr recited the verse, ʿUmar restrained himself; he would always stop in obedience to the Book of Allah. The author—may Allah have mercy on him—continues to cite hadiths that encourage patience and the suppression of anger. In this narration he relates, through Ibn ʿAbbās, the incident involving ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, may Allah be pleased with him, the Commander of the Believers and the third most virtuous person in this nation after its Prophet ﷺ.
