Chapter: The Sunnah Prayers of Jumuʿah
It includes the previously mentioned narration from Ibn ʿUmar that he prayed two rakʿahs with the Prophet ﷺ after Jumuʿah; this version is agreed upon.
1126 – Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “When one of you has performed Jumuʿah, let him pray four rakʿahs afterward.” Narrated by Muslim.
1127 – Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet ﷺ would not pray after Jumuʿah until he had left the mosque; once he reached home he would pray two rakʿahs there. Narrated by Muslim.
Commentary
Al-Nawawī (may Allah have mercy on him) says in his Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn: “Chapter on the Sunnah of Jumuʿah.” Jumuʿah is an independent prayer; it is not the Zuhr prayer. Therefore, ʿAṣr is not combined with it. In other words, if a traveler passes through a town and joins its people in Jumuʿah, he may not combine ʿAṣr with it, because Jumuʿah stands alone. The prophetic concession only allows combining Zuhr and ʿAṣr, not Jumuʿah and ʿAṣr.
Moreover, Jumuʿah differs from the other prayers in what is prescribed before it, after it, and on its day. Hence it has no regular confirmed Sunnah (rātibah) beforehand; rather, when someone enters the mosque he may perform whatever voluntary rakʿahs he wishes until the imam arrives, with no fixed number.
