Chapter: The Sunnah Prayers of Maghrib, After It and Before It
In the earlier chapters we already cited the authentic reports of Ibn ʿUmar and ʿĀʾishah which affirm that the Prophet ﷺ used to offer two rakʿahs after Maghrib.
1122 – ʿAbdullāh ibn Mughaffal (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Pray before Maghrib, pray before Maghrib, pray before Maghrib.” On the third time he added, “for anyone who wishes.” Reported by al-Bukhārī.
1123 – Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “I saw the senior Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ hastening toward the columns at the time of Maghrib.” Reported by al-Bukhārī.
1124 – He (Anas) also said, “In the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ we used to pray two rakʿahs after the sun had set and before Maghrib. Someone asked, ‘Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself pray them?’ He replied, ‘He would see us praying them and neither instructed us to do so nor forbade us.’” Reported by Muslim.
1125 – He (Anas) further related, “When we were in Medina, as soon as the muʾadhdhin gave the adhan for Maghrib, everyone would rush to the pillars and offer two rakʿahs, to the point that a newcomer entering the mosque would think the obligatory prayer had already been performed because of how many people were praying them.” Reported by Muslim.
