Sharḥ Riyāḍ al-ṢāliḥīnIbn al-'Uthaymin

the dawn sunnah prayer. A person should therefore make a point of preserving it—whether at home or on a journey. If he misses the two rakʿahs before the obligatory prayer, he should perform them afterward, either immediately or once the sun has risen about a spear’s length above the horizon.

ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) also reported that the Prophet ﷺ never left off praying four rakʿahs before Ẓuhr, offering them as two sets of two with a salutation between them, for the regular sunnah attached to Ẓuhr consists of six rakʿahs: four before it and two after it.

We ought, then, to be as eager for what the Prophet ﷺ was eager for and to follow his Sunnah as far as we are able, for Allah says, “Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example for anyone who hopes for Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much” (al-Aḥzāb 33:21). And Allah is the One who grants success.
