‘When any one of you has performed Jumuʿah, let him pray four rakʿahs afterward.’ Some scholars argued that the Prophet’s verbal directive should be given precedence, making the regular sunnah after Jumuʿah four rakʿahs. Others combined both the Prophet’s statement and his practice, concluding that the regular sunnah for Jumuʿah is six rakʿahs in total. A third view holds: if you pray them in the mosque, perform four; if at home, then two—because the Messenger ﷺ used to pray them at home as two rakʿahs while also saying, ‘Pray four after Jumuʿah.’ Thus, if one prays in the mosque he performs four, and if at home two.
The matter is broad and accommodating, God willing. Nevertheless, a person should be keen to observe these regular sunnah prayers, for they contain great benefit and make up for any deficiencies in the obligatory prayers. Allah knows best.
