so that he could perform the prayer in his home. The Prophet ﷺ granted him that concession. When the man turned to leave, however, the Prophet ﷺ called him back and said, “Do you hear the call to prayer?” He answered, “Yes.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “Then respond to it.” Reported by Muslim.
1067 – It is narrated from ʿAbd Allah—and another report names him ʿAmr ibn Qays, better known as Ibn Umm Maktum, the mu’adhdhin (may Allah be pleased with him)—that he said, “Messenger of Allah, Madinah is swarming with vermin and wild beasts.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, “When you hear ‘Come to prayer, come to success,’ then come at once!” Reported by Abu Dawud with a sound chain. The phrase ḥayyihalā means “come (quickly).”
1068 – Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “By Him in Whose hand is my soul, I have thought of ordering firewood to be gathered, then commanding that the call to prayer be given, then appointing a man to lead the people in prayer, and then going to those men who stay behind and burning their houses down over them.” Agreed upon.
[Explanation]
These three hadiths demonstrate the obligation of performing the prayer in congregation and that it should take place in the mosque. Among them is the last hadith of Abu Hurayrah, in which the Prophet ﷺ swore—though he is truthful and believed even without an oath—that he contemplated ordering the prayer to be established, then instructing a man to lead the people, and then going out with bundles of firewood to those who do not attend the prayer
