But organizing the army is a form of jihad in the path of Allah, and such jihad is permitted to encroach upon the prayer. For this very reason Allah prescribed the Prayer of Fear for the Muslims. Thus ʿUmar—may Allah be pleased with him—would arrange his troops while he was praying, yet his heart remained fully present; it did not drift right or left, for even as he marshaled the army he was worshipping Allah. We therefore ask Allah Most High to make us and you among those whose prayer keeps them from indecency and wrongdoing, and to accept from us and from you; indeed, He is capable of all things.
