unless the regular muʾadhin has delegated him or the like. In other words, do not suppose that a person should race to the mosque and call the adhan before the appointed caller, for that would be an encroachment upon him. The Prophet ﷺ said, “A man must not lead another in prayer in his own domain except with his permission.” Allah is the One who grants success.

1036. Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “When the call to prayer is made, Satan turns away and breaks wind so that he will not hear the adhan. When the call is finished he returns; when the iqama is pronounced he turns away again. After the iqama he comes back and insinuates himself between a person and his thoughts, saying, ‘Remember such-and-such, remember such-and-such’—things he had never thought of before—until the worshipper ends up not knowing how many rakʿahs he has prayed.” Agreed upon. (Tathwīb refers to the iqama.)

1037. ʿAbdullah ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “When you hear the adhan, repeat what the caller says. Then invoke blessings upon me, for whoever invokes one blessing upon me, Allah will bless him ten times over. After that, ask Allah to grant me al-wasīlah, for it is a station in Paradise reserved for only one servant of Allah, and I hope that I will be that servant. Whoever asks that al-wasīlah be granted to me, intercession will be lawful for him.” Related by Muslim.
