and white “stockings,” that is, whiteness on their legs, standing among jet-black horses with not a trace of white. Would he ever mistake these for those?’
‘No,’ they answered.
He said, ‘Likewise, you will come on the Day of Resurrection ghurran muhajjalīn—your faces radiant and your hands and feet gleaming—by virtue of the traces of wudūʾ (ablution).’
This is clear evidence of the excellence of ablution and that this community will arrive on the Day of Judgment with shining faces and luminous limbs. That radiance is a light by which people will recognise them on that momentous Day. The followers of this noble Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—will be distinguished by a sign that belongs to no other nation. I ask Allah, in His bounty and generosity, to gather me and you in that state and to make us, inwardly and outwardly, among his community; indeed, He is capable of all things.
1030 – He also narrated that the Messenger of Allah said, ‘Shall I not direct you to something by which Allah effaces sins and raises ranks?’ They replied, ‘Indeed, O Messenger of Allah.’ He said, ‘Perfecting the ablution despite hardship, taking many steps to the mosques, and waiting for one prayer after another—this is the ribāṭ, this is the ribāṭ.’ Reported by Muslim.
1031 – Abu Mālik al-Ashʿarī, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah said, ‘Purity is half of faith.’ Reported by Muslim, and its fuller wording has already been cited in the Chapter on Patience.
