with hardship, he remains patient and anticipates his reward from Allah; and if prosperity comes his way, he offers thanks and praises Allah for it, his heart calm, settled, and at ease. Such sakīna is a tremendous blessing. We ask Allah to place sakīna in our hearts and in yours. Allah the Exalted says, “He it is who sent down sakīna into the hearts of the believers so that they might add faith to their faith” (48:4); thus sakīna is one of the causes that increase faith.
“Mercy envelops them”—that is, it covers them. The verb ghashiya means “to cover,” as in His saying, “By the night when it envelops” (92:1), meaning that it blankets the earth with its darkness. In the same way, when Allah’s mercy envelops them, it surrounds and encompasses them, serving as an all-embracing cover that provides every form of mercy they need from Allah.
“The angels surround them”—they encircle the gathering, listening to the remembrance and bearing witness for those present. “Allah mentions them to those who are with Him,” that is, He mentions them in the Highest Assembly. This corresponds to the divine hadith: “Whoever remembers Me in an assembly, I remember him in an assembly better than it.”
This hadith underscores the virtue of gathering to study the Book of Allah. Allah alone grants success.
