1021 – Abu al-Dardaʾ (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whoever memorises ten verses from the beginning of Surah al-Kahf will be protected from the Dajjal (Antichrist).” In another wording: “from the end of Surah al-Kahf.” Recorded by Muslim.
1022 – Ibn ʿAbbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: “While Gabriel—upon him be peace—was sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he heard a creaking sound above him. He looked up and said, ‘This is a gate of heaven that has opened today; it has never been opened before this day.’ An angel came down through it, and Gabriel said, ‘This is an angel who has descended to earth; he has never come down before this day.’ The angel greeted and said, ‘Rejoice in two lights that have been given to you, which no Prophet before you was granted: the Opening of the Book (al-Fatiha) and the closing verses of Surah al-Baqarah. You will not recite a single letter of them without being granted it.’ ” Related by Muslim.
(The word naqīḍ refers to a creaking sound.)
Explanation
The author—may Allah have mercy on him—cites, in the chapter that encourages the recitation of particular verses and surahs of Allah’s Book, traditions concerning Surah al-Kahf as well as concerning the Opening of the Book and the ending of Surah al-Baqarah.
Concerning the first report, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us that whoever memorises ten verses from the beginning—or, in another narration, from the end—of Surah al-Kahf will be safeguarded from the Dajjal. The Dajjal is an unbelieving man.
