991 – Abu Umāmah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say, “Recite the Qur’an, for on the Day of Resurrection it will come as an intercessor for its companions.” Narrated by Muslim.
992 – Al-Nawwās ibn Samʿān (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say, “On the Day of Resurrection the Qur’an and the people who practiced it in this world will be brought forward; leading them will be Sūrat al-Baqarah and Āl ʿImrān, arguing on behalf of the one who kept their company.” Narrated by Muslim.
[Explanation]
Imām al-Nawawī (may Allah have mercy on him), in Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn, Book of Virtues, Chapter on the Merit of Reciting the Qur’an, cites the ḥadīth of Abu Umāmah in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Recite the Qur’an.” The command is given without restriction, indicating that reciting the Qur’an is recommended at all times and in every state, except when a person is attending to a bodily need—meaning urinating or defecating—because the Qur’an is exalted and revered, and should not be recited in such a condition. Likewise, when a man is with his wife in the act of intimacy, he does not recite the Qur’an; rather, at that moment he says: “Bismillāh, Allāhumma jannibnā al-shayṭān, wa jannib al-shayṭāna mā razaqtanā” (In the name of Allah. O Allah, keep Satan away from us and keep Satan away from whatever You grant us).
