42 – ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “On the Day of Ḥunayn the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) favored certain people in the distribution of the spoils. He gave al-Aqraʿ ibn Ḥābis one hundred camels, ʿUyainah ibn Ḥuṣn the same, and likewise bestowed generous shares upon other nobles of the Arabs, singling them out on that day. A man then exclaimed, ‘By Allah, this division is unjust, and in it the Face of Allah was not sought!’ I said, ‘By Allah, I shall inform the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).’ So I went to him and reported what the man had said. The Prophet’s face changed until it became as red as the dye known as ṣarf, and he declared, ‘Who will be just if Allah and His Messenger are not just?’ Then he added, ‘May Allah have mercy on Moses; he was harmed with worse than this, yet he remained patient.’ I thereupon said, ‘Never again will I convey such a statement to him.’” (Agreed upon).
His words “like ṣarf” mean a deep red dye.
