Chapter: What to say when mounting one’s animal for a journey.
Allah the Exalted says: “And He created for you, from ships and livestock, that which you ride, so that you may sit secure on their backs, then remember your Lord’s favor when you are so seated and say, ‘Glory be to Him who has subjected this to us; we could never have done it on our own. Surely to our Lord we shall return.’”
972 – Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had settled himself upon his camel, setting out on a journey, he would declare “Allahu akbar” three times and then say:
“Glory be to Him who has subjected this to us; we could never have done it on our own. Surely to our Lord we shall all return. O Allah, we ask You on this journey for righteousness and God-consciousness and for deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and shorten its distance. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Guardian over the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of travel, the gloom of sights, and an evil return concerning wealth, family, and children.”
When he returned, he would recite the same words, adding: “We return repentant, worshipful, and thankful to our Lord.” Recorded by Muslim.
