the march, gently guiding the weak, letting them ride behind him, and praying for them.” Reported by Abū Dāwūd with a ḥasan chain of transmission.
[Explanation]
The author—may Allah have mercy on him—entitles this chapter “Showing Kindness to a Travel Companion and Treating Him Gently.” Among the etiquettes of travel is that a person should act benevolently toward his companion and deal with him gently.
The author then cites three hadiths. In the first, a man came to the Prophet ﷺ while they were on a journey; the man kept looking right and left as though seeking help. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Whoever has an extra riding mount should give it to the one who has none, and whoever has surplus provisions should share them with the one who lacks them,” and he went on to list various kinds of property. Consequently, everyone began to look to his companion, seat him with him, and share his provisions.
The second hadith tells that the Prophet ﷺ ordered that two or three men take turns riding a single camel so that all the people would be on an equal footing.
The third hadith states that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would stay at the rear of the caravan during travel, urging on the weak, letting them ride behind him, and praying for them—as is confirmed in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim in the story of Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh (may Allah be pleased with him) when the Prophet ﷺ caught up with him while Jābir was on
