Chapter: Weeping and fear when passing by the graves of the wrongdoers and the sites of their destruction, manifesting one’s neediness before Allah Most High, and a warning against heedlessness in this matter.
955 – Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them) reported that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) reached al-Ḥijr, the dwellings of Thamud, he said to his Companions: “Do not enter the territory of these people who were punished unless you are shedding tears. If you are not weeping, then do not go in, lest the same calamity that struck them strike you.” Agreed upon.
In another wording: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by al-Ḥijr he said, “Do not enter the homes of those who wronged themselves, lest what befell them befall you—unless you are weeping.” He then lowered his head, quickened his pace, and continued swiftly until he had crossed the valley.
[Commentary]
The author, may Allah have mercy on him, entitles this section in Riyad al-Salihin: “Weeping when passing by the graves of the wrongdoers and fearing that what afflicted them might afflict a person,” and he then cites the hadith of Ibn ʿUmar regarding the Prophet’s passage through al-Ḥijr.
