Chapter: Giving Charity on Behalf of the Deceased and Praying for Him
Allah the Exalted said: “Those who came after them say, ‘Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith.’” (59:10)
948 – ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: A man said to the Prophet ﷺ, “My mother passed away suddenly, and I think that had she been able to speak she would have given charity. Will she receive a reward if I give charity on her behalf?” He replied, “Yes.” Agreed upon.
949 – Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “When a human being dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: a continuous charity, knowledge from which people benefit, or a righteous child who prays for him.” Narrated by Muslim.
[Explanation]
The author of Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn entitles this chapter “Charity on Behalf of the Deceased and Supplication for Him,” and then he cites Allah’s words: “And those who come after them say, ‘Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith, and do not place in our hearts any rancor toward those who believe. Our Lord, You are Ever-Kind, Most Merciful.’”
