Chapter: Supplicating for the deceased after burial and sitting by his grave for a while to pray for him, seek forgiveness, and recite the Qur’an.
946 – Abu ‘Amr—some said Abu ‘Abd Allah, others Abu Layla—‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan (Allah be pleased with him) reported: Whenever the Prophet ﷺ finished burying a deceased person, he would stand by the grave and say, “Seek forgiveness for your brother and ask that he be made steadfast, for right now he is being questioned.” Related by Abu Dawud.
947 – ‘Amr ibn al-‘As (Allah be pleased with him) said: “When you bury me, stay around my grave for about the time it takes to slaughter a camel and distribute its meat, so that I may feel comforted by your presence and know how to answer my Lord’s messengers.” Related by Muslim, and the full wording has already been cited.
[Explanation] The compiler—may Allah have mercy on him—said in his book Riyad al-Salihin: “Chapter on standing by the grave after burial and supplicating for the deceased.”
