Chapter: The funeral prayer for the deceased, accompanying the bier, attending the burial, and the discouragement of women following funeral processions
929 – Abū Hurayrah ﵁ narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever accompanies a funeral until the prayer is performed over it will receive one qirāt, and whoever stays with it until the burial is completed will receive two qirāts.” He was asked, “What are the two qirāts?” He replied, “Like two great mountains.” Agreed upon.
930 – Abū Hurayrah ﵁ also reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever follows the funeral of a Muslim out of faith and seeking reward, remaining until the prayer is offered and the burial finished, returns with two qirāts of reward, each qirāt the size of Mount Uhud. Whoever prays over it and returns before it is buried returns with one qirāt.” Narrated by al-Bukhārī.
931 – Umm ʿAṭiyyah ﵂ said, “We were forbidden to follow funeral processions, but it was not made binding upon us.” Agreed upon. In other words, the prohibition was not enforced with the same strictness applied to what is unequivocally unlawful.
