Chapter: What is to be said when someone dies, and what the bereaved should say

920 – Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon Abū Salama when his gaze had become fixed; he closed his eyes and then said, “When the soul is taken, the eyes follow it.” Some members of his family cried out, whereupon he said, “Invoke nothing but good for yourselves, for the angels say Āmīn to whatever you utter.” He then supplicated: “O Allah, forgive Abū Salama, raise his station among those who are rightly guided, succeed him in his descendants who remain, forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds, make his grave spacious for him, and fill it with light.” Reported by Muslim.

921 – She also reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “Whenever a servant is struck by a calamity and says, ‘Indeed we belong to Allah, and to Him we shall return. O Allah, reward me in my misfortune and grant me something better than it in exchange,’ Allah, Exalted is He, will reward him for his affliction.”
