and follow the same prescription, yet one of them dies while the other recovers, for the whole matter is in Allah’s hand. He is the Healer, whereas the medicines that are prepared or the incantations that are recited are only means, and we have been commanded to make use of those means, as the Prophet ﷺ said, “Seek treatment, but do not seek treatment with what is unlawful.” He also said, “Allah has not sent down any disease without also sending down for it a cure.” His words, “There is no healing except Your healing,” spoken by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, are utterly true: there is no healing except Allah’s healing. Allah’s healing—there is no healing besides it—while any healing wrought by created beings is nothing more than a means. The One who truly heals is Allah; neither the physician nor the medicine itself produces the cure. The physician is a means, the medicine is a means, but the Healer is Allah alone.
His phrase “a cure that leaves no sickness behind” means a complete cure that leaves not a trace of illness.
Accordingly, when a person visits someone who is ill, he should pass his right hand over the patient and recite this supplication. Allah is the One who grants success.
