Sharḥ Riyāḍ al-ṢāliḥīnIbn al-'Uthaymin

However, at a later time we should let him know that when a person sneezes he ought to say, “al-hamdu lillah” (Praise be to Allah); this falls under the heading of instruction. The sneezer’s praise must be audible. Likewise, when he is greeted with “yarḥamuka Allah” (May Allah have mercy on you), he replies, “yahdikum Allah wa yuṣliḥ bālakum” (May Allah guide you and set your affairs right)—that is, may He rectify your condition—so you are praying for him to receive guidance and for his situation to be improved. Some ordinary people say instead, “yahdīna” (May He guide us) or “yahdikum Allah” (May Allah guide you), but this deviates from the prescribed wording. The wording that has been legislated is: “yahdikum Allah wa yuṣliḥ bālakum,” as we have explained. Allah alone grants success.
