/0L2 Chapter: Seeking Permission and Its Etiquette
Allah the Exalted says: “O you who believe! Do not enter homes other than your own until you have sought permission and greeted their occupants with peace.” And He also says: “When the children among you reach puberty, let them ask permission [to enter] just as those before them were required to ask permission.”
870 – Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Permission is to be requested three times; if you are granted leave, then enter, but if not, turn back.” Agreed upon.
871 – Sahl ibn Saʿd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Permission was prescribed only because of the gaze.” Agreed upon.
872 – Rubayʿī ibn Hirāsh narrated: A man from Banū ʿĀmir told us that he sought permission to enter upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while the Prophet was indoors, saying, “Shall I come in?” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his servant, “Go out to this man and teach him how to seek permission. Tell him: ‘Say, Peace be upon you; may I enter?’” The man heard this and said, “Peace be upon you; may I enter?”
