- Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet ﷺ passed by a woman who was weeping beside a grave and said, “Fear Allah and be patient.” She retorted, “Leave me alone, for you have not suffered my calamity,” not realizing who he was. She was then told, “That was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” So she went to the Prophet’s door and found no guards stationed there. She said, “I did not recognize you.” He replied, “True patience is at the first shock.” Agreed upon. Muslim’s wording adds: “She was weeping over her child.”
[Explanation]
The author—may Allah have mercy on him—relates, through Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet ﷺ passed by a woman at the grave of her young son, whom she had loved dearly. Overcome with grief, she had gone out to his grave to weep there. When the Prophet ﷺ saw her, he instructed her to fear Allah and to be patient, saying, “Fear Allah and be patient.” She answered, “Leave me alone, for you have not been afflicted as I have,” meaning: go away from me, for your ordeal is not like mine. This indicates how overwhelming her trial was, whereupon the Prophet ﷺ left her.
