‘and in Your Messenger whom You have sent,’ it could be understood as referring to Gabriel, for Gabriel is a messenger whom Allah dispatched to the prophets with revelation. You should therefore memorize this invocation, recite it when you lie down on your beds, and make it the last thing you say, in obedience to the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him and his family peace—and in emulation of his sunnah and guidance. This forms part of the etiquette of sleep.
It is also out of Allah’s wisdom and mercy that you can hardly find a human action without a prescribed remembrance attached to it: putting on clothes has its supplication, eating has its supplication, drinking has its supplication, sleeping has its supplication—even a man’s intimacy with his wife has its supplication. Every single act has a remembrance so that a person will not become heedless of remembering Allah, keeping His remembrance ever alive in the heart and constantly upon the tongue. This is one of Allah’s favors, and we ask Allah Most High to grant us gratitude for it and to aid us in upholding it.
816 – ʿĀʾishah, may Allah be pleased with her, said: “The Prophet ﷺ would pray eleven rakʿahs during the night. When dawn broke he would pray two light rakʿahs, then lie down on his right side until the muʾadhdhin came to inform him that the time for prayer had arrived.” Agreed upon.
