Book on the Etiquettes of Sleep
Chapter: The Etiquettes of Sleep, Lying Down, Sitting, Attending a Gathering, Companionship, and Dreams
814 – Al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ lay down in his bed, he would lie on his right side and then say: ‘Allāhumma aslamtu nafsī ilayka, wa wajjahtu wajhī ilayka, wa fawwaḍtu amrī ilayka, wa aljaʾtu ẓahrī ilayka, raghbatan wa rahbatan ilayka; lā maljaʾa wa lā manjā minka illā ilayka; āmantu bikitābika alladhī anzalta wa nabiyyika alladhī arsalta.’ (O Allah, I have surrendered myself to You, directed my face toward You, entrusted my affair to You, and relied upon You, out of hope in You and fear of You; there is no refuge and no escape from You except to You. I believe in Your Book that You have revealed and in Your Prophet whom You have sent.)” Al-Bukhārī recorded this wording in the Book of Manners of his Ṣaḥīḥ.
815 – From the same Companion: He said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: ‘When you come to your bed, perform ablution as you do for prayer, then lie on your right side and say …,’” and he reported a similar supplication in which occurs the phrase, “…and make them the last words you utter.” Agreed upon.
