799 – Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The izār (lower garment) of a Muslim should come to mid-calf. There is no sin—or, he said, no blame—in whatever falls between that and the ankles; but whatever is below the ankles is in the Fire. And whoever lets his izār trail out of pride, Allah will not look at him.” Related by Abū Dāwūd with a sound chain.
800 – Ibn ʿUmar, may Allah be pleased with them both, said: “I passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while my izār was hanging low. He said, ‘ʿAbd Allāh, raise your izār.’ I raised it. He then said, ‘Higher.’ So I raised it further, and after that I kept to that length.” Some of the people asked, “To where?” He replied, “To the middle of the calves.” Related by Muslim.
801 – He also narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever drags his garment out of arrogance, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection.” Umm Salamah asked, “What, then, should women do with the hems of their garments?” He said, “They may let them down a handspan.” She said, “Then their feet will be exposed.” He said, “Let them down a forearm’s length, no more.” Related by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī, who graded it ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ (sound and authentic).
