This incident demonstrates that wearing one’s jummah—that is, keeping a man’s hair long—is a sign of vanity, and that a man’s hair should not go past the shoulder, the earlobe, or anything close to that length. It is women who require adornment of the head; they are the ones for whom such beautification is meant. The report also indicates that men must not imitate women in their hair or in anything else, for the Prophet ﷺ cursed “men who imitate women and women who imitate men.” Allah, exalted is He, has created males and females as two distinct categories, granting each what suits that category; therefore, it is impermissible to make men resemble women. I know of no Muslim who has ever tried to equate women with men in every respect. Rather, it is the disbelievers—those whose natural disposition Allah has overturned—who elevate women and insist that she must participate alongside the man so that no distinction remains. This plainly contradicts the innate nature upon which Allah fashioned His creatures and opposes the revealed law brought by the messengers: women have their own qualities and men have theirs. When the man in question heard the Prophet’s remark, he cut his jummah, and in that lies clear evidence of obedience.
