either by saying, for instance, “May Allah reward you with good; please overlook this—leave off such talk,” and the like. Allah the Exalted has said, “Show forgiveness, enjoin what is right, and turn away from the ignorant.” “Show forgiveness” means: accept the easy and lenient side of people’s conduct; do not demand that they present themselves to you in the most perfect manner. People will never conform completely to your personal wishes, so take from them what comes readily and easily, and do not insist on what is difficult for them. For this reason He also said: “Enjoin what is right, and turn away from the ignorant.” Thus, if an ignorant person abuses or reviles you, simply turn away from him, for that is where the good, the benefit, and the advantage lie.
797 – Abu Hurayrah reported that while a man was praying with his lower garment trailing, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, “Go and perform ablution.” The man went, performed ablution, and returned; the Prophet then said, “Go and perform ablution again.” Someone asked, “Messenger of Allah, why did you tell him to make ablution and then remain silent about it?” He replied, “He was praying while his garment was hanging below his ankles, and Allah does not accept the prayer of a man who lets his garment trail.” Narrated by Abu Dawud with a sound chain that meets the conditions of Muslim.
