when in fact he has not been offered more than eight. He swears to that effect, and such a person deserves all four punishments: on the Day of Resurrection Allah will neither speak to him, nor look at him, nor purify him, and a painful punishment awaits him. We ask Allah for well-being.
796 – Abu Juray, Jabir ibn Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with him), said: “I saw a man whose opinion the people accepted; whatever he said, they followed. I asked, ‘Who is this?’ They said, ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’ I said twice, ‘Upon you be peace, O Messenger of Allah.’ He replied, ‘Do not say, “upon you be peace”; that is the greeting of the dead. Say instead, “peace be upon you.”’
I asked, ‘Are you the Messenger of Allah?’ He said, ‘I am the Messenger of Allah: if hardship strikes you and you supplicate to Him, He removes it; if a year of drought befalls you and you call upon Him, He makes the earth verdant for you; and if you are in a barren land or open desert, lose your mount and call upon Him, He will return it to you.’
I said, ‘Give me advice.’ He said, ‘Do not insult anyone.’ After that I never reviled a free man, a slave, a camel, or a sheep. He added, ‘Do not disdain any act of goodness—even meeting your brother with a cheerful face counts as goodness. Raise your lower garment to mid-calf; if you refuse, then to the ankles. Beware of letting it hang lower, for that is arrogance, and Allah does not love arrogance. And if someone abuses you and taunts you with something he knows about you, do not taunt him with what you know about him; the consequence of that will rest solely upon him.’”
