780 – Samurah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Wear white, for it is the purest and most pleasant of your clothes, and shroud your dead in it.” Related by al-Nasāʾī and al-Ḥākim, who declared the ḥadith sound.
781 – al-Barāʾ (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was of medium height, and I once saw him in a red suit of clothes; I have never seen anything more beautiful than him.” Agreed upon.
[Commentary]
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) cites another verse: “And He has made for you garments that shield you from the heat, and garments that protect you in battle” (al-Naḥl 16:81).
Sarābīl are protective garments; in our usage, shirts, coats of mail, and similar attire are all called sarābīl. Concerning Allah’s words, “garments that shield you from the heat,” these are cotton and the like that protect against heat. As for “garments that protect you in battle,” they are iron sarābīl—coats of mail fashioned from iron—that people of old wore during war and combat because they guarded a person against incoming arrows. They are essentially interlinked metal rings.
