It therefore behooves a person to look after this garment by fearing Allah and by constantly reflecting on his own sins and transgressions, for purifying oneself from sins is actually easier than washing outward clothes. Visible garments require effort, fatigue, expense, and the preparation of water and detergent, whereas the inward cleaning is exceedingly simple. Allah says: “Those who, when they commit an indecency or wrong themselves, remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins…” (Āl ʿImrān 3:135). Through istighfār (seeking forgiveness) and sincere tawbah (repentance) every past offense is wiped away. We ask Allah, by His favor and generosity, to turn to us in forgiveness.
He, Exalted is He, also says: “And He has made for you garments that protect you from the heat, and garments that protect you in battle” (al-Naḥl 16:81).
779 – Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Wear white from among your garments, for it is among the best of your clothes, and shroud your dead in it.” Related by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī, who graded the ḥadīth ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ.
