Sharḥ Riyāḍ al-ṢāliḥīnIbn al-'Uthaymin

it, and he explicitly stated the reason. The report of Umm Salamah further shows that eating from gold- and silverware ranks among the major sins, for the Prophet ﷺ threatened the one who does so, saying that whoever eats or drinks from such a vessel “is only causing the Fire of Hell to gurgle in his belly.” The term jarjarah (gurgling) refers to the sound food and drink make as they pass down the throat. Thus, whenever a person eats or drinks from a gold or silver container, he is in fact letting the Fire of Hell gurgle inside him. This threat establishes that the act is a major sin, because every sin that carries a specific threat is counted among the gravest offenses. As for utensils merely plated with gold or silver, the scholars have ruled that they take the same ruling as solid gold or silver: it is impermissible to eat or drink from them.
