Chapter: The permissibility of drinking from any pure vessel except those made of gold or silver; the permissibility of drinking directly with one’s mouth from a river or elsewhere without using a vessel or even the hand; and the prohibition of using gold and silver vessels for drinking, eating, purification, or any other form of use.
774 – Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The time for prayer arrived, so those whose homes were nearby returned to them, while others stayed. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was then brought a stone wash-basin so small that he could scarcely spread his hand inside it, yet everyone present performed ablution from it. They asked, “How many of you were there?” He replied, “Eighty and a little more.” Agreed upon; this is al-Bukhārī’s wording.
In another narration recorded by both al-Bukhārī and Muslim: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) requested a vessel of water. A broad cup containing a small amount of water was brought to him, whereupon he placed his fingers in it. Anas said, “I kept watching the water springing up between his fingers, and I estimated that between seventy and eighty people performed ablution from it.”
775 – ʿAbdullāh ibn Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) visited us, and we brought out for him water in a brass wash-bowl, and he performed ablution. Narrated by al-Bukhārī.
