Sharḥ Riyāḍ al-ṢāliḥīnIbn al-'Uthaymin

Chapter on the etiquette of drinking: the recommendation to breathe three times outside the vessel, the disapproval of breathing into the vessel, and the recommendation to pass the cup to each person on the right after the one who begins.

757 – Anas (Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would pause to breathe three times while drinking. Agreed upon—meaning that he breathed outside the vessel.

758 – Ibn ʿAbbās (Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, “Do not gulp down your drink in a single draught like a camel; instead, drink it in two or three draughts. Say the name of Allah when you begin, and praise Him when you finish.” Related by al-Tirmidhī, who graded the report as ḥasan (sound).

759 – Abū Qatādah (Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ forbade breathing into the vessel. Agreed upon.
