So they took him and climbed the mountain. The boy prayed, “O Allah, protect me from them in whatever way You will.” The mountain quaked beneath them, they all plunged to their deaths, and the boy returned on foot to the king. The king asked, “What became of the men who were with you?” He replied, “Allah Most High delivered me from them.”
The king then handed him to another group of attendants and said, “Take him aboard a qurqūr (large boat), sail to the middle of the sea; if he recants his religion, release him—otherwise, cast him overboard.” They set out with him, and he prayed, “O Allah, protect me from them in whatever way You will.” The boat overturned and they drowned, while the boy once more walked back to the king. The king asked, “What happened to your companions?” He answered, “Allah Most High delivered me from them.”
The boy said to the king, “You will never be able to kill me unless you do what I instruct you.” The king asked, “And what is that?” He replied, “Gather all the people on an open plain, tie me to the trunk of a tree, take an arrow from my quiver, place it on the bowstring, and say, ‘In the name of Allah, Lord of the boy,’ then shoot me. If you do that, you will kill me.”
So the king assembled the people on a single plain, tied the boy to a trunk, took an arrow from the boy’s quiver, set it on the bowstring, and proclaimed, “In the name of Allah, Lord of the boy.” He shot him, and the arrow struck the boy in his temple. The boy put his hand to the wound and died. The people cried out, “We believe in the Lord of the boy!”
Someone reported to the king, “See what you feared? By Allah, the very thing you dreaded has come to pass—the people have believed.” The king ordered trenches to be dug at the road junctions; they were dug and fires were kindled in them. Then he announced, “Whoever does not renounce his faith, hurl him into the fire,” or they were told, “Plunge in!” They complied until a woman arrived carrying her infant. She hesitated to jump, but her child said, “Mother, be steadfast, for you are on the truth.” (Reported by Muslim)
