Sharḥ Riyāḍ al-ṢāliḥīnIbn al-'Uthaymin

—meaning the upper side of Mecca—and depart from its lower side. In the same vein, it is Sunnah to reach ʿArafah by one road and return by a different one. Some scholars, however, maintain that the matter is entirely dependent on ease of access: take whichever route is more convenient, whether from the upper side or the lower. In any event, if you can readily enter from the upper approach and leave from the lower, that is commendable; should it indeed be an act of worship, you will have attained its reward, and if it is not, no harm will come to you. If this is not possible—as is often the case nowadays, when the roads are regulated in a single direction and one cannot deviate—the issue remains broad, and all praise belongs to Allah.
