Sharḥ Riyāḍ al-ṢāliḥīnIbn al-'Uthaymin

saying that her son was in the throes of death. She was asking the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, to come. When her messenger reached the Messenger of Allah, he, peace be upon him, said: “Tell her to remain patient and to seek her reward, for to Allah belongs whatever He takes and to Him belongs whatever He gives, and everything with Him is set for a fixed term.”

The Prophet, peace be upon him, instructed the man his daughter had sent—who was the mother of this child—to convey the following words:

“Let her be patient,” meaning: let her hope for the reward from Allah through her patience. Some people do bear calamities without protesting, yet they do not look forward to Allah’s reward; as a result they miss a great deal of good. When a person is patient while seeking recompense from Allah—hoping that Allah will reward and compensate him—that is true iḥtisāb (seeking the reward). So: “Tell her to be patient” with respect to this affliction, “and to seek her reward” from Allah Almighty.

His statement, “for to Allah belongs whatever He takes and to Him belongs whatever He gives,” is a momentous principle. If everything is Allah’s, then when He takes something from you He has only taken what is His, and when He grants you something it is likewise His. How, then, can you resent it when He removes from you what is His own property?

Therefore, whenever Allah takes from you something beloved, you should say, “It belongs to Allah; He may take what He wills and grant what He wills.”

For this reason it is recommended that when a person suffers a calamity he say, “Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we shall return,” meaning: we are Allah’s possession; He does with us as He wills. In the same way, whatever we love—if He removes it from our hands—remains His: “to Him belongs whatever He takes and to Him belongs whatever He gives.” Even what He grants you is not truly yours; it is Allah’s. Hence you may dispose of what Allah has given you only in the manner He has permitted. This shows that the ownership we hold over what Allah grants us is an entrusted, restricted ownership.
