it would take to slaughter a camel and distribute its meat, so that he might find comfort in their company. This indicates that the dead are aware of their kin. It is authentically reported from the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—that the deceased hears the shuffle of their sandals when those who buried him walk away; even that faint tapping reaches his ears once they leave the grave. In a sound narration it is also related that whenever the Prophet buried someone he would stand by the grave and say, “Ask forgiveness for your brother and pray that he be made firm, for he is now being questioned.” Accordingly, after a burial it is recommended to pause at the grave and say: “O Allah, make him steadfast, O Allah, make him steadfast, O Allah, make him steadfast; O Allah, forgive him, O Allah, forgive him, O Allah, forgive him,” for the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—would pronounce the salām three times and, when supplicating, repeat it three times. We ask Allah, Exalted is He, to keep us and you firm with the unshakable word in this life and the Hereafter. The point here is that the son of ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ said to him, “The Prophet gave you glad tidings of Paradise,” which is a legitimate form of conveying good news and congratulating someone upon it.
