She went on to say, “We announce his passing to Gabriel, for it was Gabriel who used to bring him revelation morning and evening. Now that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—is gone, Gabriel’s descent to earth with revelation has likewise come to an end, for revelation ceased with the Prophet’s death.”
Then, when he had been carried to his grave and interred, she exclaimed, “Could your hearts bear to scatter dust upon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him?” Such words sprang from the intensity of her grief and longing, even though she knew that the Companions—may Allah be pleased with them—harbored nothing but boundless love for the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Could their hearts truly find contentment in what had happened?
The answer is yes, for this was the will of Allah—exalted is He—and His ordained law. Had it been possible to ransom the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—with everything on earth, the Companions—may Allah be pleased with them—would certainly have done so. Yet Allah alone issues the decree, and to Him is the final return, as He says in His Book: “Indeed, you are to die, and indeed they are to die. Then on the Day of Resurrection you will dispute before your Lord.” (al-Zumar 39:30–31).
Benefits:
This hadith demonstrates that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—was a human being like any other: he fell ill, felt hunger and thirst, experienced cold and heat—every human condition befell him. As he himself said, “I am only a man like you; I forget just as you forget.”
