So fear Allah, and do not put me to shame regarding my guests. Is there not one right-minded man among you?—yet, alas, there was not a single sensible man among them; we seek Allah’s protection from such a state.
They answered, “You know perfectly well that we have no claim upon your daughters, and you surely know what we want,” meaning: you are aware that we desire those young men who have come to you.
Lot said, “If only I had some strength to withstand you, or could take refuge in a powerful support!”
The angels then said, “Lot, we are messengers of your Lord; they will never reach you.” They went on to instruct him to set out with his family by night and to leave the town.
In Surah al-Qamar the Almighty says: “The people of Lot rejected the warnings. We sent upon them a storm of stones, except for the family of Lot; We delivered them at dawn, as a favor from Us—thus do We reward those who give thanks. He had already warned them of Our might, but they disputed the warnings. They even sought to entice him away from his guests, so We obliterated their eyes. Taste then My punishment and My warnings.”
It is said that the angels struck them on their faces and their eyesight vanished; others report that Allah Himself blotted out their sight on the spot. In any event, Lot’s plea—“do not disgrace me concerning my guests”—shows that his guests were honored in his eyes, just as guests were honored by Abraham, peace be upon him.
The conclusion is that when a guest lodges with you, you are obliged to host him for one day and one night. However, do not act like the foolish who burden themselves with excessive display and needless expense.
