Chapter: Dignity and Tranquility
Allah the Exalted says: “And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth with humility, and when the ignorant address them, they respond with words of peace.” (Quran 25:63)
703 – ʿAʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: “I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ laugh in such a way that his uvula became visible; he would only smile.” Agreed upon. (Lahawāt is the plural of lahah: the small piece of flesh at the far end of the roof of the mouth.)
[Commentary]
The author—may Allah have mercy on him—writes: “Chapter on Dignity and Tranquility.”
• Dignity (waqār) is a bearing that marks a servant so that whoever sees him feels respect and reverence for him.
• Tranquility (sakīnah) is the absence of excessive movement and of impetuousness; the person remains composed in heart, limbs, and speech.
Undoubtedly, these two qualities—dignity and tranquility—are among the finest of traits.
