Sharḥ Riyāḍ al-ṢāliḥīnIbn al-'Uthaymin

Chapter: The recommendation to articulate one’s speech clearly, explain it to the listener, and, when needed, repeat it until it is understood.

696 – Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that whenever the Prophet ﷺ spoke a statement he would repeat it three times so that it would be understood, and when he came upon a group and greeted them, he would give the greeting three times. Reported by al-Bukhari.

697 – ʿAʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said, “The speech of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was distinct and clear; everyone who heard him could comprehend it.” Reported by Abu Dawud.

Explanation

The author, al-Nawawi — may Allah have mercy on him — said: “Chapter on the recommendation to clarify speech, make it plain for the listener, and repeat it so that he understands if he cannot grasp it otherwise.” In other words, when a person speaks and addresses people, he should do so with clear, measured words. He should not rush, nor swallow one word into the next; rather, he must pronounce each properly. His speech should be distinct, plain, and intelligible, enabling the listener to understand without hardship or strain.
