689 – Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: “The signs of the hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when he is entrusted, he betrays.” Agreed upon. In another version recorded by Muslim he added: “—even if he fasts, performs the prayer, and claims to be a Muslim.”
690 – ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: “There are four qualities; whoever possesses them is a pure hypocrite, and whoever has one of them has a trait of hypocrisy until he abandons it: when he is entrusted, he betrays; when he speaks, he lies; when he pledges, he proves treacherous; and when he disputes, he transgresses all bounds.” Agreed upon.
691 – Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) once told me, “If the revenues from Bahrain arrive, I will give you such-and-such,” and he gestured with his hands three times. The wealth from Bahrain did not arrive before the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) passed away. When it finally reached Medina, Abū Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered a proclamation: “Whoever has a promise or a debt due from the Messenger of Allah, let him come to us.” I went to him and informed him of what the Prophet had promised me. He scooped up a handful for me; I counted it and found it to be five hundred (coins). Then he said, “Take the same amount again.” Agreed upon.
