of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’ She then said, “Do not let anyone know the secret of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”

Anas later said to Thābit—who was constantly in his company—“Had I been going to inform anyone of it, I would have told you,” that is, the errand for which the Prophet ﷺ had sent him.

This ḥadīth contains a number of benefits:

First: It displays the fine character and profound humility of the Prophet ﷺ. In spite of his lofty rank, eminent status, and prestige with Allah and with people, he humbled himself to the extent that he would greet children while they were playing in the marketplace. How many of us do that, except those whom Allah enables?

Second: The narration indicates that it is recommended (sunna) to greet with salām everyone one passes by, even children. The salām is a supplication: when you say, “Peace be upon you,” you pray for your brother, and when he replies, “And upon you be peace,” he prays for you. Moreover, greeting children trains them in sound manners so that they grow up and live by them, and you earn reward for every act of guidance they acquire through you. Indeed, in every matter of goodness to which people are guided by your example, there is reward for you.

Third: It is permissible to send a child on an errand, provided he is trustworthy. If he is unreliable—given to excessive play and heedless of responsibilities—then you should not depend on him.

Fourth: The jurists—may Allah have mercy on them—have stated that if a child comes to you
