Book of Etiquette
Chapter: Modesty—its virtue and the exhortation to embody it
681 – Ibn ʿUmar reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a man from the Anṣār who was admonishing his brother about modesty. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Leave him, for modesty is part of faith.” Agreed upon.
682 – ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Modesty brings nothing but good.” Agreed upon. In another version recorded by Muslim he said, “Modesty is pure goodness,” or, “All of modesty is good.”
[Commentary]
The author, al-Nawawī (may Allah have mercy on him), says in his Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn, Book of Etiquette, Chapter on Modesty—its merit and the call to cultivate it: “Adab (etiquette) is the set of moral qualities that a person adopts; it takes many forms.”
