For that reason you will find that those who have the deepest faith in Allah and the Hereafter are usually the most generous in charity.
The Prophet ﷺ then said, “And the Quran is either an argument for you or against you.”
The Quran is the firm rope of Allah, His conclusive proof over His creation. It will stand in your favor if you use it as a means to draw near to Allah and fulfill its rights: affirming the information it conveys, carrying out its commands, shunning its prohibitions, and venerating and honoring this noble Book. In that case it will testify for you.
But if you treat it oppositely—demeaning the Quran, abandoning it in word, meaning, and practice, and neglecting its dues—then it will bear witness against you on the Day of Resurrection.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned only these two possibilities; he did not speak of a state in which the Quran is neither for nor against a person, for inevitably it must be one or the other. We therefore ask Allah to make it a proof in our favor, guiding us by it in this world and the next. Truly, He is Most Generous and Munificent.
His statement, “All people set out in the morning; they sell their souls, thereby either freeing them or ruining them,” means that everyone begins the day at dawn engaged in some pursuit—an observable reality. Allah, exalted is He, has made the night a time of rest and said, “He is the One who takes your souls by night and knows what you have done by day; then He raises you up again therein” (Quran 6:60). The sleep of night is thus a minor death: the nerves calm, the body relaxes, its vigor is renewed for the work ahead, and it recovers from the toil already spent. When morning comes—the early hours—people set out, each heading toward his particular occupation.
