where no one can see him, his heart free of all worldly attachment. The very act of remembrance humbles him, and his eyes overflow with tears.
These are the seven whom Allah will shade beneath His shade on the Day when there is no shade but His. Two or more of these qualities may be combined in a single person, yet possessing only one of them is enough.
The author then cites the ḥadīth of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ (may Allah be pleased with them both): the Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) said, “The even-handed will be on pulpits of light on the Day of Resurrection—those who act with justice toward their families and toward all whom Allah has placed under their authority.” In other words, those who are fair with their households and with everyone over whom they have been given charge will stand upon pulpits of light, to the right of Allah, on the Day of Resurrection.
This ḥadīth proves the virtue of being just with one’s spouse, one’s children, and everyone for whom Allah has made one responsible. Be just, therefore, so that you may stand upon a pulpit of light to the right of Allah on the Day of Resurrection. Allah is the One who grants success.
3/661 – ʿAwf ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) say, “The best of your leaders are those you love and who love you, for whom you pray and who pray for you; and the worst of your leaders are those you hate and they hate you, whom you curse and they curse you.” He was asked, “O Messenger of Allah, shall we not oppose them?” He replied, “No, as long as they establish the prayer among you—no, as long as they establish the prayer among you.” Related by Muslim.
His words “you pray for them” mean: you supplicate for them.
